چکیده

We study the effects of various types of education and training on the ability of teachers to promote student achievement. Previous studies on the subject have been hampered by inadequate measures of teacher training and difficulties addressing the non-random selection of teachers to students and of teachers to training. We address these issues by estimating models that include detailed measures of pre-service and in-service training, a rich set of time-varying covariates, and student, teacher, and school fixed effects. Our results suggest that only two of the forms of teacher training we study influence productivity. First, content-focused teacher professional development is positively associated with productivity in middle and high school math. Second, more experienced teachers appear more effective in teaching elementary math and reading and middle school math. There is no evidence that either pre-service (undergraduate) training or the scholastic aptitude of teachers influences their ability to increase student achievement. ________________________________________ We wish to thank the staff of the Florida Department of Education's K-20 Education Data Warehouse for their assistance in obtaining and interpreting the data used in this study. Teacher Performance-Based Accountability: Why, What and How

The effect of the teacher on student achievement has been shown to be greater than effects due to class size, school, and student socioeconomic status (Sanders & Horn, 1998). Yet proxies implemented by states and districts to determine teacher quality have been woefully inadequate. T...

" The Impact of Teacher Credential s on Student Achievement in China Jessica

Teacher quality is an important factor in improving student achievement. As such, policymakers have constructed a number of different credentials to identify high quality teachers. Unfortunately, few of the credentials used in developing countries have been validated (in terms of whether teachers holding such credentials actually improve student achievement). In this study, we employ a student-...

Generalizations about Using Value-Added Measures of Teacher Quality

Second, variables often used to determine entry into the profession and salaries, including post-graduate schooling, experience...
